Nigerian Gov’t Suspends 5% Telecom Tax

The Federal Government on Monday suspended the controversial 5% excise duty on telecommunication services recently announced by the Ministry of Finance and Nigerian Customs.

The suspension was made known by the Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Isa Pantami,  during the inaugural meeting of the Presidential Committee on Excise Duty for the Digital Economy Sector in Abuja.

The minister said he is personaly against the implementation of the tax due to its potential to increase the cost of telecommunication services. He argued that it will be insensitive to impose new tax on the industry at a time industry reels from multiple taxes that are currently causing many challneges to industry stakeholders
