BUHARI SIGNS 2022 ELECTORAL AMENDMENT BILL INTO LAW

President Muhammadu Buhari on Friday, February 25, 2022, signed countries Electoral Amendent Bill into Law after sustained by joint IMS and other CSOs led advocacy on the president to sign the bill. The bill which became an ‘Act’ with the presidnet’s signature, is a repeal law which provides the legal framework for the 2023 national elections.

The President assented to the bill at past midday on Friday at a brief ceremony held at the Council Chamber of the Aso Villa in Abuja. The President of the Senate, Ahmed Lawan, and Speaker of the House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila, witnessed the signing of the bill.

Before signing the bill, the president had barely a week to the expiration of the constitutional window he must make a decision on either to sign or reject the bill. The bill was transited to the president by the National Assembly on January 31.

Members of the President’s cabinet in attendance included his Chief of Staff, Professor Ibrahim Gambari, and the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Boss Mustapha, among others.

The bill was eventually signed after IMS and other European Union for Democratic Governance in Nigeria (EUSDGN) project, staged a peaceful protest in Abuja to protest the delay in the signing of the bill.
