The National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) is the regulatory body responsible for broadcasting in Nigeria. It was established under the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) Act 38 in 1992 and subsequently amended by the NBC (Amendment) Act 55 of 1999. Both the original and amended laws are now consolidated in the Laws of the Federation of Nigeria.
In addition to establishing the regulatory body, the NBC Act also outlines the framework for licensing and the involvement of private entities in broadcasting in Nigeria.
However, stakeholders have expressed concerns regarding the coverage of the regulator’s powers as outlined in the law. The extent of regulatory power directly impacts its effectiveness. This edition aims to delve into this subject and shed light on the issue.
